Hardwoods such as teak, ipe, and white oak have long been the gold standard. Teak’s natural oils repel water so aggressively that shipbuilders once carved hulls from it; left untreated, it turns an elegant silver instead of warping. Ipe, twice as dense as teak, laughs at termites and carries a Class-A fire rating, the same given to concrete and steel.
